Villefranche de Conflent is in the foothills of the Pyrénées in the shadow of Canigou, the highest peak at the eastern end of the mountain chain. It is a small walled medieval town which has the advantage of having witches living in the local grottes (caves) who enter the town on 31st April to chase away all the bad spirits left over from the winter. It is also the beginning of the "Little Yellow Train" railway line which will take you right up onto the Cerdagne Plateau
