High in the "Black Mountains", North of Carcassonne is the River Alzeau - the first source of water for the Midi Canal.
Pierre Paul Riquet was the inspiration and creater of the Midi Canal - close by the "Hameau de Lacombe" he diverted the stream to provide the original source of water for the canal.
This "feeder" canal is called the "Rigoule de la Montagne"
This map shews the route of the "Rigoule" - the blue line along the top, starting on the Right and following the contours past the Basin de Lampy (centre Left), which supplies more water. Then, on the Left going through a tunnel to the Basin de St Ferréol, which is the largest supply dam.
